Running to the Aid of Talbot County’s Youth

Local Marathon Training Program To Raise Money for YMCA Facility

To create positive change in their communities, some people run for political office; others run charitable organizations. And some people will run 13.1 or 26.2 miles to make a difference in lives of the youth living in Talbot County.

Beginning May 9, the third annual Marathon ROCKS charity marathon training program commences and aims to have 100 local residents on the team. Aside from completing the phenomenal feat of running either a marathon or half marathon, the goal of the program is to raise money for the new Teen and Family Center at the YMCA of Talbot County Easton facility and for the youth development programs that Easton ROCKS After School (www.eastonrocks.org) will provide within it.

Under the coaching support of Amy Eutsey and Lea Ann Robinson, co-founders of Marathon ROCKS, Mid-Shore runners of any ability—from beginner to seasoned athlete—will train for the Virginia Beach Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon (September 6) or the Marine Corps Marathon (October 25). Some may even run both. To participate in the 18- or 26-week training programs participants agree to raise at least $1,000 in donations.

Since 2007, Marathon ROCKS has successfully trained 70 participants from the area to run half and full marathons in Baltimore, DC, and Virginia Beach. In addition to improving their physical health and forging profound friendships, runners for Marathon ROCKS have raised $85,000 in just two years for youth programs sponsored by Easton ROCKS After School.

There is a public informational meeting on Marathon ROCKS at the YMCA in Easton on April 22 at 7 p.m. YMCA CEO Robbie Gill and Coaches Eutsey and Robinson will give a short presentation on the program, answer questions, and register participants for the 2009 marathon team.

Team Marathon ROCKS 2009 is sponsored by MidShoreLife.com, ShopMGI, Shore Pediatrics, and the Greene Turtle. Easton ROCKS, the YMCA of Talbot County, the Marine Corps Marathon, and the Virginia Beach Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon are proud charity partners.
